EGG DONATION

Colloquially, both giving and receiving eggs is known as egg donation.

Egg donation

Professionals, working in fertility treatment, call giving eggs to another woman or couple egg donation, while receiving donor eggs is called egg reception. The technical term for the egg is oocyte, and thus the terms oocyte donation and oocyte reception are also frequently used.

When a woman donates eggs to another woman or couple, then the egg donor is the child’s biological origin, but legally maternity is transferred to the recipient of the egg.

According to the Danish Health Authority’s guidelines, an egg donor must be between 18 and 35 years of age and may be the source of no more than 12 children. It is recommended that an egg donor should donate eggs a maximum of six times. An egg donor can choose to be a known, anonymous or open donor.

A known donor is typically a donor whom the recipient knows.

An anonymous egg donor isn’t known by the recipient, but it’s possible to obtain information concerning skin colour, hair colour, eye colour, height, weight, blood type and age.

An open egg donor can give permission to the recipient to acquire more information, including the child being given permission to contact the egg donor when he or she child turns 18 years of age.

Double donation

As of 1/1-2018, double donation has been made legal in Denmark, i.e. you can now receive both donor eggs and donor sperm in the same treatment, although it’s stipulated that one of the donors (either the egg or the sperm donor) must be non-anonymous.
