Why freeze your eggs?

Freezing your unfertilized eggs / social freezing is an option for those who wish to take control of their fertility. It’s not about postponing the dream of having children, but about giving yourself the freedom to choose the right time.

Egg quality declines with age, which is why many women choose to freeze their eggs while they are still young and fertile. It can offer peace of mind and hope.

At IVF-SYD, we meet women in many different life situations, and we understand that the decision to freeze eggs is both personal and important. Our goal is to create a sense of security, provide knowledge, and support you throughout the entire process.

Egg freezing is not a guarantee, but a possibility – an investment in your future, on your own terms.

About the treatment

The treatment begins with a first consultation with one of our doctors. We will talk about your wishes, your health, and your options. You will receive a treatment plan designed specifically for you – with focus on both egg quality and your individual situation.

When you are ready, you will start hormone injections, which you administer yourself at home over approximately 10–12 days. The medication stimulates your ovaries to mature more eggs than usual. Throughout the process, we monitor you closely with ultrasound scans.

Once the eggs are mature, we schedule the egg retrieval. This is a short and gentle procedure performed under light sedation. You will be in safe hands throughout, and can go home within a few hours.

After the retrieval, your unfertilized eggs are frozen using the latest technology – known as vitrification – which ensures high survival rates upon thawing. The eggs are stored securely with us, and you decide when you want to use them.

The entire process is planned with care, respect, and professionalism. We are with you every step of the way – from the first consultation to the moment your eggs are safely frozen.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old to freeze my eggs?

Fertility and age are closely linked for women. The older you are, the fewer eggs are produced in the ovaries and the quality of the eggs decreases. Based on this, freezing of unfertilized eggs should be done as early as possible, and no later than when you are 38 years old.

How many eggs should I freeze?

It is recommended that 15-20 unfertilized eggs or more are frozen, which usually means that you will need to undergo an average of 2-3 egg retrievals. During the consultation, we will discuss how many eggs we recommend freezing, as this depends on your age.

Does it hurt?

The egg retrieval itself is gentle and takes place under light anesthesia.

You may find it helpful to take over-the-counter painkillers (Pinex/Pamol/Panodil) from home.

Can I freeze eggs without having a partner?
