NIPT is a safe test
NIPT is a safe, simple and highly accurate test that checks for chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus.
The test consists of a blood test from the pregnant woman, in which small fragments of the foetus’ DNA are found in the blood sample. This allows the most common chromosomal abnormalities to be detected and the sex chromosomes to be analysed. The sample can be taken as early as the 10th week of pregnancy and the results are available after approximately 8 working days.
The blood test examines the following:
- Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
- Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18)
- Patau syndrome (trisomy 13)
- Boy/Girl
- Turner syndrome
- Klinefelter syndrome
- Triple-X XYY karyotype
- Sex chromosomes (optional)
- DiGeorges syndrome (optional)

The test is approved for use in pregnancies with 1 child, twin pregnancies and pregnancies resulting from IVF treatment.

A NIPT test at IVF-syd
A NIPT test at IVF-syd always includes an ultrasound scan before we do the blood test.
The scan helps to give you certainty and reassurance about the pregnancy. We make sure that the foetus is growing and everything looks as it should at that time.
You will be given ultrasound images to take home and it will be possible to record short video sequences in connection with the scan, so remember to bring your phone or camera.
